Salary-backed loans (cessione del quinto): employees, pensioners and the emergency services
The instalment is deducted straight from your salary or pension and never exceeds a fifth of the net amount. It is the simplest product on the market in structure, and the one where price differences between lenders are largest and least visible.

What people usually look at
- The monthly payment
- «It is regulated by law, the offers are all the same»
- The headline rate on the leaflet
What I look at
- The total you repay at the end of the term
- The cost of the two compulsory policies, capitalised up front
- The APRC, which includes all of it
The law sets the maximum term and the share of salary that can be assigned, not the price. Two offers with the same payment can have different terms and, over ten years, several thousand euros of difference in what you repay.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How much can I borrow?
Up to €60,000. The amount comes from the assignable instalment — one fifth of your net salary or pension — multiplied by the term the lender grants, up to a maximum of one hundred and twenty months. So your net pay, your length of service and, for private-sector employees, your accrued severance provision all count. I do the exact calculation on the first call.
Are there special terms for the police and armed forces?
Yes. For personnel of the State Police, the Carabinieri, the Finance Police, the Prison Police and the Armed Forces several lenders apply dedicated agreements with terms that differ from the standard ones. They are not the same for every service or every length of service: I check which apply to you before submitting anything.
Are the offers not all the same, since it is regulated by law?
The law regulates the maximum term, one hundred and twenty months, and the assignable share, one fifth of net pay. It does not regulate the price: the cost of the compulsory insurance and the commissions vary considerably and end up in the APRC. That is why it is worth comparing lenders.
Is my employer told?
Yes, necessarily: it is your employer who deducts the instalment from your salary and pays it to the lender. For pensioners the same role falls to the pension provider. It cannot be avoided, and it is as well to know that before starting.
Can I renew it before the end?
Yes, generally once at least two fifths of the term have passed, with some variation between lenders. A renewal settles the current loan and opens a new one: it has to be compared on the total, because it is not always worth it.

I have been doing this for 25 years. In that time I have learned one thing that really matters: the difference between a yes and a no almost never lies with the client, it lies in which bank reads their situation and how it is put to them.
